Why we love her: Incredible designs, Maja is certainly one of the coolest change makers we’ve interviewed. She inspires on a new level, the creativeness is eternal and her lifestyle sounds like a dream. Keep up the good work Maja.
Tell us about yourself, who is Maja?
I'm a fashion designer turned textile artist. I have a lot of fire and get new ideas all the time which I have found is easier to transmute into art pieces. That way I can turn an idea into physical form faster and that is very satisfying. But I also love to play with the idea that clothes can be art - lately I've made pieces that both can hang on the wall and be worn. I guess I'm interested in the way we express ourselves with clothes and how we treat them. Why not be a wandering artpiece and treat your clothes like the treasures they are? I also like to upcycle second hand clothes into unique treasures by adding quilted pieces and pearls.
In addition to that I'm an adventurer, 1/3 generator (human design) and living in the countryside with my man and 2 children. Advocate for honest sharing, slow living, dancing, journaling, meditating and coming together for deep conversations and hand craft.
What’s your relationship with clothes?
I guess I just answered that :D I love vintage and second hand and rarely buy new clothes. Taking care of what I have, upcycle and find vintage treasures is everything!
How would you describe your style?
Fun and playful. I LOVE pink and all kinds of colors so I do my best to mix it all up and have fun with it.
Any favourite items?
My 501 Levis that I've put quilted eye patches on the knees and some cuffs on the bottom.
Do you have a style icon, if yes, who?
Yes! Looove Marianne Theodorsen - all those colors and patterns make me so happy!
We love your amazing patchwork designs, tell us about this passion of yours?
Thank you! I have juggled between illustration and sewing for a long time and when I found that I could mash them together by making these quilted pieces it all made sense! I just love the process of making them - to find the right composition of materials and colors is so exciting to me. Also the texture and physicality of them makes my heart sing - it's so much more than just a flat picture. And the fact that it can be used in multiple ways - put it on the wall, on your clothes or on a shopping bag to pimp it up!
Are you selling your creations?
Yes I am! On my website www.majastabel.no. I also take commissions.
Where do you find inspiration?
Ohh in so many ways! But I love everything cosmos related and are very into spirituality and the wonder of it all so that, in addition to all the wonderful creations I see on Instagram, really inspired me.
What is a sustainable closet for you?
As I mentioned earlier it's about taking care of what I have and having a small closet with quality items + buying second hand and upcycle with quilted patches.
