The Swedish brand Residus launches a collection made of wool from Sweden
Every year more than 1500 tons of wool is being wasted in Sweden. On the island of Gotland, sheep is a common sight, but most of the wool being cut twice a year has no buyer. However, the lack of demand is not because brands in Sweden don’t need wool. Sweden imports tons of wool from other countries which is a very unsustainable practice.
The Swedish brand Residus wanted to do something about it and decided to launch a collection with a few items made of Swedish wool. It was a challenge to go from raw material to garment since there’s no textile industry in Sweden anymore that can do the spinning and so on. However, with some help from a local at Gotland, Residus managed to export the wool to Denmark for spinning and then produce the clothing in Lithuania. Resulting in a Scandinavian collection, as local as possible. To make the clothing material smooth and nice to wear, the wool from Gotland were mixed with merino wool from Faroe Islands.
Congratulations Residus for the achievement! We hope more brands will follow your example and stop importing wool and take care of the existing local wool.
