Why finding your style icon can be a good thing
Several people have asked me lately while building this platform what my style is. Nothing strange with that since I have asked people the same during my interviews. Some people have clear answers and some might not have a person, but a certain brand or style they admire.
I envy them.
It seems to be easier to know what one love. It seems to be easier to be influenced by someone. It’s like having a compass when visiting second hand shops or exchanging clothes. Without an icon it feels like you don’t know your style.
Well, A Sustainable Closet wants to move away from trends, fashion influencers and icons that promotes over-consumption - but an icon could be someone from the 70s who you just admire just because he/she is from the 70s.
But a few days ago something happened.
I found my icon.
I found the person who’s style I’ve been unconsciously saving on Pinterest.
Jeanette Friis Madsen - the danish influencer and founder of the brand Rotate! She’s well known in the fashion industry but for someone, like me, with a background in economics and social science… this was a new discovery.
And when I asked myself why I love the way she dress. I realised:
Her outfits looks comfortable but stylish
She variates her outfits and style day by day
She’s good at mixing oversize with petite
She’s colourful
She’s a natural beauty with little makeup
She always has nice bags and shoes
These has been some very interesting insights for me to understand my own needs and relationship with clothes. It has given me a better compass to navigate with while exchanging and buying clothes. It feels like I understand myself better. I want to be colourful, I want to dress differently from day to day and I want it to look and feel comfortable!
Who’s your fashion icon? Ask yourself and write down why and see if you learned something about yourself!
And why not sharing that with me by commenting? I would love to know your thoughts on this!
