How to move away from “I got nothing to wear”
I believe many of us have or will experience the “I got nothing to wear” moment. Maybe it’s more common the younger and more insecure you are, maybe a little bit less common when you’re more mature and knows what you like to wear on a daily basis.
The reason why we feel that way probably has to do with the fact that we don’t know what’s in our closet and we have surely not created one what fit our needs, our lifestyle and our bodies.
To move away from “I got nothing to wear” mode, you need to create a closet that really suits you and the first step is to get to know your closet. This is how you do it:
STEP 1 Take out all your clothes from your closet
STEP 2 Start to go through the clothes and try them on. Sort them out in Keep, Donate, Fix and Sell. The Keep ones could also be categories according to season and so on if your closet is small (more about this in step 3). They can also be categorised if there’s something you like to keep but doesn’t fit at the moment. Donate are things you can give to friends, exchange with friends or give to charity. Some second hand shops accept clothes that might be damaged, others don’t. Please respect their terms when you donate and opening hours for donating. Fix can be done by you or someone who knows how to sew. Put it in a box until it’s time or hand it in to a tailor. Sell can be brands with a higher second hand value like Acne or Filippa K, find a digital platform you like or a store who do the selling for you. If you have invested in a certain brands, you can make a good income by doing this.
STEP 3 Categories your clothes to see how many items you have in each category. If you have many jeans, do you have the tops to use them all or are they too many according to what you wear with them? Do you have many nice blouses but no jacket to wear over them during winter? Do you have plenty of T-shirts but none of them you find suitable at work? It’s all about understanding the ratio and get to know the clothing you really need to combine with the clothes you already have and love. Analyse your list and keep it, update it and use it when you’re consuming new clothes.
STEP 4 Pick your favourite items you wear the most and ask yourself why do you love them? Is it the material? The colour? The brand and design? How they fit? The history behind them? How long have you loved them? Get to know your favourites and make sure your list of categories over time reflects your favourites. Then you will have a closet with things you always love to wear.
STEP 5 Take time to find the items you need to combine with that you already have. Maybe it’s a cool jacket that’s needed for you to use more of your jeans. Spend time searching on second hand or find a better produced one. Don’t assume that you will be able to fix this issue in a short time period. See it as a long term thing and make sure you do this exercise a few times a year. Maybe you have already found new favourites before you even found that jacket you thought you needed.
It’s all about getting to know yourself and having fun while doing so! Good luck!
