INTERVIEW #18 GEMME COLLECTIVE
So much fun to have you here on A Sustainable Closet today! Tell us, how are you?
Thank you so much for chatting to me, so glad to be here! I am extremely happy, tired (haha long nights) and excited for what the future will bring!
And now to your business, what is Gemme Collective?
Gemme is your digital dream closet that never ends. It’s like sharing clothes with your best girlfriends just that your girl gang got a lot (a LOT!) bigger. Simply said it’s like an Airbnb but for fashion, a marketplace where brands, influencers and style muses list their closets and rent unbelievable pieces.
What is the main idea behind the concept?
To be able to wear any amazing outfit even though you can’t afford it and/or don’t want to harm the environment.
What has been the largest gain up until now?
The largest gain is a 100% when a Gemme member gets over the top happy by dressing up in a vintage Dior jacket, & other stories dress and a Chanel bag at a fraction of the price and doing mother earth a huge favor! That feeling is worth everything!
What do you think needs to change in the fashion industry in order to make it more sustainable?
Stop overproduction.
What is “greenwashing” according to YOU and what in your opinion, can producers and consumers do to avoid it?
Greenwashing is riding the wave of sustainability as a marketing trick but not working towards real sustainability. Producers need to slow down production and consumers need to slow down consumption.
What is your advice to fashion consumers out there who seek to create a sustainable closet and lifestyle?
Boring but true, invest in lifetime pieces and the rest should be second hand, borrowed from a friend or rented. It’s so much fun when you put together an outfit that has a story, I mean a real story with previous owners, not a story from a factory, a ship and warehouse. Imagine having an old Chanel jacket from your best friend's mother, classic Levi’s jeans that have been worn by many people before you and a Jacquemus bag rented from your fav influencer, how cool is that?
Rent your next outfit and follow on social media!
