The Earth Suit Project - clothes for an uninhabitable earth

More than a year ago the designer Kate Walz launched The Earth Suit Project. She says that it is an “initiative that questions how clothing will evolve in correlation to our environment- taking into consideration the unpredictable proliferation of temperature, water levels, precipitation, air pollution, and waste we now live with”.

This is done by “exploring future fashion systems through a collection of technical and speculative wearables based on fundamental human needs. The Earth Suit Project will consist of multiple elements directly linked to and inspired by space suit construction, serving as a model for surviving in climate conditions that are conceivably harsher than our own” - according to Querencia Studio.

On her Instagram profile you can see some of the clothing that the project has resulted in. Querencia Studio, which she is the lead designer for, also launched the Earth Suit Shoe together with Zellerfeld Inc. The shoe is 100% recyclable and 3D-printed. In other words, it’s made after being ordered.

This is probably just one example of many where climate and environmental awareness emerges with art and tech in a fashion setting. We’re looking forward to see more of these design, creating awareness and inspiration.
