Material Guide: ECOVERO™

What is the popular Ecovero material made of? It is viscose, which in simple words can be described as a fibre made of biomaterial such as wood. Ecovero has a lower environmental impact compared to other viscose materials confirmed by the Higg Material Sustainability Index. The Higg MSI tools assess the impacts of materials from cradle-to-gate for finished materials, for Ecovero comparison analysis has only been made from cradle to production gate. Water impact is 50% lower, it has a 50% lower carbon emission impact, the wood is only sourced from FSC and PEFC-managed forests and the fibre decomposes in 3 months which is way longer than polyester. The Ecovero fibre is also certified according to the EU-label standard. To keep the supply chain transparent the fibres are traceable.

Ecovero has been developed by Lenzing group. The list of partners and brands using Ecovero is long, Espirit, Armedangeles, Indiska and Ganni among others.

Note!

At A Sustainable Closet we are always positive to changes within the fashion industry and towards materials that can replace existing virgin polyesters, however, what is most important is that companies reduce their total volume of new materials, that we reuse the material that has already been produced and that whatever new material that is put on the market in needs to have a long lifespan and be produced not only in environmental but also socially sustainable manner.
