List of ethical and sustainable Christmas gifts
A Sustainable Closet believes that a fashion platform can be so much more than just promoting consumption. That our relationship with clothes can be far greater than just us being consumers. To give and receive gifts from your loved ones during Christmas is for many a tradition and a must, but more and more people start to realise that Christmas should be about other things than just buying stuff no one needs for money they don’t have. Some are starting to break norms and are instead giving gifts to charity, buy things second handed or create their own hand-made items.
However, this year has also been a hard year for many companies. Sales has decreased which might be viewed as a good thing from an environmental perspective, but if we want to change an industry and create decent jobs, products that people love and can use over time where nature hasn’t been exploited, companies and brands promoting ethical and more sustainable products are needed.
Consumption per see is not a bad thing, but it needs to be a conscious one where the things we purchase are meant to be used and last for a very long time, until they’re reused, remade or recycled by others or ourselves.
A good idea is to figure out if your Christmas shopping and giving is conscious. Here are some tips you can ask yourself:
Why do we (the ones you give gifts to) do this? Does it comes from an intention of giving without expecting anything in return or does it feels like a must?
Are we conscious about what gifts that truly brings joy or is it more about just giving?
Do we give on an equal basis or is it okey for some to give and not others?
Are our shopping financially sustainable for everyone (you should definitely have money over in the end of the month, if you normally have that).
Do we really give gifts that brings joy and has been produced fair and consciously? Think about that businesses you’re supporting when buying gifts.
Can we use left-over papers or other packaging?
