How To Care For Your Inner Sustainability in 2025

By Sophie Gripenberg

As 2025 gets started the world probably faces more issues than ever before. It’s easy for anyone who cares about human rights, the living world and our common home planet Earth, to feel deprived and depressed. It easily happens that people engage in making this world a better place and take it on their shoulders to fix everything. We must find a balance when it comes to devoting time and energy to outer and inner sustainability so when we do take action we do that from a place of rest and clarity. We want to start this year with a few reminders and tools on how you can look after your inner sustainability, while keep being a force of change in this world. You matter. Inner sustainability involves creating a balanced, compassionate relationship with yourself. It’s about conserving your emotional and mental resources, just as you would conserve water or energy. Here’s how to nurture this dimension:

1. Dare to Say No

Rest is a vital part of a sustainable lifestyle. Learn to prioritize your well-being by saying no to invitations or commitments that drain your energy. Choosing to stay home and rest is not selfish, it’s sometimes necessary.

2. Dare to Ask for Help

Sustainability isn’t about going it alone. Whether it’s leaning on friends, family, or professionals, asking for help builds a supportive network that strengthens your resilience. And also helps others to do the same.

3. Dare to Fail

Striving for perfection is exhausting and unsustainable. Embrace the possibility of failure as a learning experience. It’s okay to not have everything figured out and when things don’t go as planned.

4. Dare to Be Vulnerable

Saying “I don’t know” or admitting uncertainty is a courageous act. Vulnerability fosters authentic connections and relieves the pressure to always have the right answer. It can also be about sharing your story and being open about your struggles. It only makes you human and you’ll see that people will admire you and connect with you even on a deeper level.

5. Pause from Media Overload

Digital overstimulation can sap your mental energy, especially as our feeds on social media, traditional news, and email inboxes can be overloaded with negative trends in this world. Many who care about the world's state also feel guilty if they’re not active online and keep their activism going on social media. It is okay to take a pause once in a while. We’re in this together and we take turns. Regularly disconnect from social media, news, and screens to recharge your mind and focus on what truly matters.

6. Focus on Energy and Nutrition

View health as an act of kindness toward yourself. Choose foods and activities that energize and nourish you, but don’t be too hard on yourself if you miss a workout or indulge in comfort food. If health becomes another must and stresses you out. It’s not healthy anymore.

7. Practice Self-Compassion

Life rarely goes exactly as planned. When your health goals or sustainability efforts fall short, practice forgiveness. Acknowledge your efforts and permit yourself to try again.

We hope these insights will help you to improve your wellbeing while still being a force of good in this world. Remember it is what we do together as a community that matters. It’s not on your shoulders to fix the world.
